China continues to grapple with imported cases of the coronavirus after stamping the disease out from its epicentre, Wuhan. The country reported 89 infections on Monday, with health officials saying that the rise in asymptomatic patients poses a serious concern and risk.
COVID-19 cases have been increasing again after the country managed to contain the first wave of infections as hundreds of Chinese nationals returned home from various countries. Over the weekend China reported its highest number of new daily coronavirus cases in nearly six weeks.
Officials said 2,000 Chinese nationals were brought home on 16 chartered flights. The majority of new arrivals are being vigorously screened. However, select cities, such as Beijing, where the case count is lower, have not implemented strict screening measures. China has also banned the entry of foreign nationals by cancelling all existing visas.
A total of 108 new coronavirus cases were reported on Sunday, up from 99 a day earlier and marking the highest number of cases since 143 cases were reported on March 5.
China’s National Commission (NHC) confirmed that 89 new COVID-19 cases, including three local infections, were reported on Monday. All three new locally transmitted cases were reported in Guangdong Province.
As of Monday, China reported a total of 1,464 imported cases, of which 905 are still undergoing treatment. A worrying proposition for Chinese health officials is the growing number of asymptomatic cases, which climbed to 1,005, with 54 new cases. The overall number of confirmed cases in China reached 82,249 on Monday, including 3,341 deaths, 1,170 patients who are still receiving treatment, and 77,738 people who have been discharged after recovery, NHC said.
